Investigation underway after vehicle crashes into northwest home

Fire crews work to remove a vehicle that crashed into a northwest home Thursday.

An investigation is underway after a vehicle collided with a home in northwest Calgary Thursday.

Calgary fire crews responded at around 11:25 a.m. to the 200 block of Santana Bay N.W. where they discovered a vehicle had smashed into the deck of a home.

“The technical rescue team was called in because there was structural damage to the home,” said Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan.

“Crews have done some shoring,” Kwan said . “The car appears to have gone through one of the pillars for the walk out area and part of the deck, so they’re shoring that up and working to remove the vehicle.”

Kwan said no one was injured.

Calgary police told CTV News that responding officers believed the vehicle was stolen.

They said no arrests have been made, but officers are looking for suspects.

Neighbours unsettled

Homeowner Pat Donnelly, who just moved into the home last September, said he was “devastated” by the incident.

“How they did this, I don’t know,” Donnelly said.

“And then they just disappeared,” he added.

“They’ve gone. We don’t know where they went.”

Donnelly said he was sitting downstairs when he heard a huge bang.

“My wife called me and said she saw the whole deck lift,” he said. Donnelly said they have been doing renovations to the back of the house but will now focus on fixing the deck.

Neighbour Maya Bedard said the crash was unsettling.

“I took a look, and it looked like there was a car in my neighbour’s house, wheels were spinning , there was smoke, a lot of commotion,” Bedard said.

“It kind of makes me feel a bit unsafe knowing a lot of kids can play in our cul-de-sac and knowing there can be cars going at high speeds,” she said. “Knowing I was once a kid playing in that (same) cul-de-sac. Something needs to be done.”
