Calgary hotel evacuated over carbon monoxide concerns

Emergency crews respond to the Emerald Hotel & Suites for a CO scare on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026.

A hotel in the community of Sunridge had to be evacuated on Thursday due to high levels of carbon monoxide.

Firefighters were called to the Emerald Hotel & Suites, located at 2750 Sunridge Blvd. N.E., at 2 p.m.

Alex Kwan, the Calgary Fire Department’s public information officer, says CO levels of more than 300 ppm were detected in the basement.

All 120 of the guests in the hotel were forced outside, but Calgary Transit buses were brought in to keep everyone warm.

“We have crews in the basement trying to isolate the source of the CO, while crews are going floor to floor to make sure everyone evacuated,” Kwan said.

Two people were assessed by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital in stable condition.

Number of CO calls up from 2025

Kwan says since Tuesday, CFD has responded to 23 CO calls with 12 confirmed incidents.

Looking at data over the last five years, he says the fire department gets the most calls for CO exposure in December, January and February, with January having the highest number of reports.

He added in 2025, CFD responded to 62 CO calls in January and 69 in February. This year the CFD responded to 73 CO calls in January and 44 calls in February as of 5 p.m. Thursday.
