Canadian company uses AI and robotics to fabricate homes in Calgary

A Canadian company is hoping to help with the affordable housing crisis... through use of artificial intelligence and robotics.

At a 60,000-square-foot facility in Calgary’s northeast, artificial intelligence, automation and robotics are being utilized as tools to address housing shortages.

“We are helping to unlock the housing supply the province urgently needs—not with small pilots, but with real, industrial-scale solutions that empower builders to do more with less,” said Ramtin Attar, CEO and co-founder of Canadian company Promise Robotics, in a news release.

The company’s proprietary factory-as-a-service platform allows for prefabricated homes to be produced at the facility in a few weeks’ time, which Promise Robotics says is key.

“Despite Calgary’s third consecutive year of record-breaking growth, experts estimate that Calgary alone must build 9,000 more homes each year beyond current output to restore housing affordability to pre-pandemic levels,” officials said.

Reid Hendry, the chief housing officer with the City of Calgary, thinks the number of units needed could be anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 based on current migration statistics.

“We have about 2.6 people per home, and so when we talk about a need to deliver 10,000 more homes a year, that’s really talking about 26,000 Calgarians that aren’t being served if we can’t hit those increased volume targets,” said Hendry.

The chief housing officer says the city’s goal is for people to spend 30 per cent or less of their income on housing.

“Calgarians are still struggling to afford housing-related bills. We have a lot of work to do to get back to pre-pandemic levels and get back to an area where an everyday Calgarian doesn’t think about their housing costs on a daily basis,” said Hendry.

Hendry thinks modular housing is quickly becoming a great way to increase supply.

“We have a big hill to climb in front of us with regards to supply. We need all of the tools that are going to help us deliver housing choices and supply to Calgarians.”

The facility at 140-11575 Stonehill Dr. N.E. has been operational since summer 2025 and has already produced homes for partners like Mattamy Homes’ Alberta division.

Developers of all sizes will be supported by the factory.

“Alberta is a place of innovation, where we solve problems and make life better for the people who call our province home,” said Joseph Schow, minister of jobs, economy, trade and immigration.
