An iconic aircraft has touched down at the Springbank Airport allowing visitors an opportunity to tour, or fly in, the American relic.

The Aluminum Overcast, a B-17 bomber, was built in 1945 and never saw action during the Second World War.

The Experimental Aircraft Association brought the 71-year-old bomber to southern Alberta to allow guests a chance to chance to take a trip of a lifetime.

On Wednesday, a number of war veterans gathered near the runway to visit the Aluminum Overcast and reminisce.

When 94-year-old Doug Curtis was 19, he flew 48 missions in a Canadian Lancaster bomber as a tail gunner. He says the sound of aircraft from that period is unmistakable.

“If you're inside, it's a bloody nuisance, the sound of them because of that roar,” recalls Curtis. “When you're outside and hear that fade off into the distance, it's just memories that it brings back of all the fellows you used to do this with.”

The Aluminum Overcast will remain at the airport through Sunday, June 26. After Calgary, the tour has scheduled stops in Regina and Winnipeg.
