Calgarians can experience an array of cultural celebrations in May as part of Asian Heritage Month. Celebrations kicked off Friday at The New Gallery in Chinatown. Events coming up in May include Chinese music experiences at the National Music Centre, an international game day, a Hong Kong Association street food event, a Japanese kimono fair, Korean community drumming workshops, and events by the Hindu and Sikh communities. Some events are ticketed, while others are free. “It builds community spirit, and it builds unity, which is very important for Canada today,” said Teresa Woo-Paw, Asian Heritage Foundation Southern Alberta founder and chair. “And then for the community to see themselves included and reflected being part of the broader Calgary community, Alberta community, is very important for them to strengthen their sense of belonging.” The Asian Heritage Foundation was formed in 2002, the same year that May was designated as National Asian Heritage Month.
