Orillia residents asked to weigh in on next steps to reduce poverty

The City of Orillia says it wants residents to help shape the next steps in tackling poverty.

The City launched a public survey, giving residents the chance to share which actions matter most to them. The survey focuses on 19 recommendations, covering housing, youth supports, food, transit, and arts and recreation.

According to the City, the 19 priorities were developed after seven months of discussion by the Poverty Reduction Working Group. The group reviewed more than 100 ideas identified in Resilient Orillia: Toward a Poverty Reduction Strategy, a study prepared for the city by a Lakehead University student in 2024.

Mayor Donald McIsaac said the city wants residents’ input so the actions reflect the community’s real challenges. Councillor Janet-Lynne Durnford explained the survey is “a conversation” with residents that would help shape what is presented to council.

The City says the survey results will guide recommendations to council later this year.

The Poverty Reduction Working Group, mandated by city council, is tasked with evaluating which actions are most practical, exploring long-term governance and partnerships, coordinating with local agencies, and finding ways to maximize resources.

Residents who take part, according to officials, will directly influence how Orillia addresses poverty in practical ways.

The survey is open now until Sept. 29 and can be completed through the City’s website.
