Organizations helping people warm up during this deep cold

On the coldest day so far this season, many organizations have opened their doors to those looking to stay warm.

The Salvation Army in Barrie opened its warming station on Monday, offering a hot meal during this deep cold.

“Very tough,” says Leanne Morrow. “Where your hands are like frozen, where you can’t move them; all you want to do is get inside.”

The Salvation Army says it will not hesitate to reopen any of its warming stations throughout the winter.

The Collier Street United Church also opened their doors overnight for the Barrie Out of the Cold program. The church can house 35 people, who would otherwise be left without a warm place to sleep.

Meteorologists said temperatures on Monday felt like -23 C with the wind chill.

The low temperatures are expected to spike back up around the freezing mark later in the week.
