They’re being knocked down, damaged, stolen and in some cases, tossed into ditches. Municipal election signs across Southern Georgian Bay have become targets of vandalism, police said. Ontario Provincial Police have received multiple reports of election signs being damaged, removed or disappearing during the municipal campaign. They’re now reminding people that tampering with signs can carry consequences. Interfering with election signs Police say that includes removing a sign from someone’s property, taking it without permission, damaging it or dumping it elsewhere. While election signs may not be everyone’s favourite front lawn furniture, police say frustration with a candidate or campaign message is never an excuse to interfere with them. “OPP would like to remind residents that disagreements with candidates or campaign messages should never result in damage to property or interference with election materials and should be respected regardless of political views,” police said. Depending on the circumstances, those responsible could face criminal charges. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity involving election signs is encouraged to contact police.
