A Rail Safety Week traffic project in Saskatoon helped lead to the arrest of two people wanted Canada-wide. Members of the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) recently conducted an enforcement initiative on Sept. 22. Police say around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Avenue W South and 11th Street, an automated license plate reader notified police of a vehicle with a suspended registered owner. Police conducted a traffic stop, and learned two passengers were both wanted Canada-wide. The first was a 27-year-old man wanted Canada-wide for assault, robbery and theft Under $5,000, out of Vancouver. The second was a 23-year-old woman, found to be unlawfully at large out of Regina and wanted Canada-wide for breach of statutory release. Both were arrested and issued tickets for failing to wear a seatbelt. The woman also faces several other new charges. A search of the vehicle turned up bear spray, a collapsible baton and unopened alcohol. An investigation later found a separate call for service was made shortly before the traffic stop for a theft at a business, where multiple bottles of alcohol were stolen. Video evidence identified the thieves as the man and woman arrested in the traffic stop. The duo was then charged with Theft Under $5,000. Rail Safety Week runs Sept. 21-27. Operation Lifesaver Canada says the goal of the week is to raise awareness and help prevent railway crossing and trespassing incidents across Canada.
