Honouring the fallen through golf; YRPA raise $20K

Honouring the fallen is a long-standing tradition in this country, but it can be done in more than one way.

For the York Regional Police Association (YRPA), that way is golf.

More than 150 people came together in Aurora on Wednesday to participate in the 36th annual Memorial Golf Tournament.

The police association says the tournament is held every year in honour of those who made “the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty”.

“This tournament not only honours the memory of our fallen officers, but also reflects the values of service, compassion, and community that are central to our profession,” said Sean Briard, YRPA president.

It also doubles up as a fundraiser, with donations being collected for Community Living Central York and the YRPA’s Benevolent Fund.

This year, the tournament raised $15,000 for Community Living and $5,000 for the fund.

According to YRPA, the money from the fund provides financial assistance to the association members and their families during times of hardship caused by illness, injury or death.
