P.E.I. records sharp decline in RSV hospitalizations for infants and seniors

Prince Edward Island is noting a sharp decline in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) hospitalizations among infants and seniors.

Since 2024, RSV hospitalizations have declined by 93 per cent among infants and 52 per cent among seniors so far this season, according to a news release from the province.

The government credits its RSV protection program, which was first introduced in 2024 and offered vaccines to residents of long-term and community care homes.

The program expanded in 2025 to include infants and seniors over 75 living independently in the community.

“This program shows what’s possible when prevention is prioritized,” says Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle in the news release.

“Seeing fewer hospitalizations is extremely encouraging, and it means our youngest and oldest Islanders are better protected while easing pressure on the health system.”

Infants and seniors are most at risk of becoming dangerously ill or experiencing complications when infected with RSV.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Heather Morrison says the decline is a “great sign of progress.”

“Behind these numbers are infants and seniors who were protected from serious illness, which is extremely reassuring from a public health perspective,” she says.

The province says expanding eligibility and delivery locations will reduce barriers like extra appointments and transportation needs, making RSV protection more accessible.
