Trailer loaded with tires goes up in flames near Moncton

No injuries have been reported after a fire in Lutes Mountain, N.B.

According to the Moncton Fire Department, crews were called to a fire in a trailer loaded with tires on Route 126 at around 8:30 a.m.

Moncton Fire Department Platoon Chief Brad Calhoun says the trailer had caught fire inside of a shop, but crews were quickly able to get it outside into the yard of the property. Thick smoke could be seen billowing in the area while crews battled the fire.

The fire was taken care of by 11 a.m., according to Calhoun, and two crew members remained on scene to make sure all the tires were extinguished.

Calhoun says tires pose a problem in fires as they automatically become a Class B fire, which is on par with fuel fires such as diesel or gasoline.

In total, two trailers and a sea can were involved in the fire. The shop was not damaged as a result of the crews’ quick thinking, according to Calhoun.

Calhoun says investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.
