The RCMP is treating the death of a 34-year-old man in downtown Moncton, N.B., as a homicide. Police say they responded to a report of a seriously injured man on St. George Street around 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday. They found Zachary Pollock in the parking lot. Pollock went to hospital with critical injuries and later died. There was a large police presence at the Bridge to Home Resource Hub on St. George Street Thursday morning. Tyler Jardine told CTV News Atlantic he stays at the shelter and knew the victim. “It’s sad. It really is,” says Jardine. Police tape was wrapped around much of the outside of a building and up the street. The tape was taken down around 9 a.m., but plainclothes officers and members of Codiac Regional RCMP remained on site conducting interviews with shelter clients. Ron LeBlanc works in an apartment complex next to the shelter. “It’s terrible,” he says. Lisa Collette lives near the site of the incident and heard the sirens overnight. “It’s terrifying, it’s horrible,” she says. “It’s unnecessary because it’s not a way of life for any of us.” Police say an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. CTV News has reached out to the John Howard Society of Southeast New Brunswick, the organization that runs the shelter, for more details. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred last night. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Jo-Ann brine, the society’s executive director, says in a written comment. “Our staff responded immediately and provided assistance while emergency services were contacted and attended the scene.” Brine adds that the John Howard Society of Southeast New Brunswick is co-operating with police as the investigation goes on, but they will not provide further comments at this time.
