Weather statements in the Maritimes warn of wet, windy Halloween

CTV meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says the Halloween forecast is much more trick than treat for the Maritimes. Special weather statements have also been issued.

Special weather statements have been issued across the Maritimes, warning of wet and windy conditions for trick-or-treaters.

The ugly weather is expected to come from a low-pressure system pulling in moist, tropical air from Hurricane Melissa, according to the Canadian Hurricane Centre.

Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm after pummeling Jamaica.

Nova Scotia

Rain and strong winds are expected on Friday across Nova Scotia.

Up to 50 millimetres of rain is in the forecast, though higher amounts may be possible.

Environment Canada says gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour are also expected, except from Margaree Harbour to Bay St. Lawrence, where winds up to 110 km/h are possible.

New Brunswick

It’s a similar situation in New Brunswick, where up to 50 mm of rain is expected across the province.

East to southeasterly wind gusts of up to 70 km/h are also forecast along the coast.

Prince Edward Island

And on P.E.I., similar rain amounts of up to 50 mm are possible.

Potential east to southeasterly wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are also in the forecast.

More warnings possible

Environment Canada says there is some uncertainty as to where the highest rainfall amounts will fall across the Maritimes.

“But the potential exists for significant totals over some locations. Warnings may be required for some areas,” the statement reads.
