Halifax breaks heat record from 1921; temperature records set in all three Maritime provinces

Temperatures soar Thursday for a second straight day in the Maritimes.

What a day for May heat in the Maritimes!

Hot weather settled over the region on Thursday allowing for high temperatures in many communities to reach the high 20’s and in some cases low 30’s. An onshore southwest wind kept temperatures more moderate on parts of the coast.

Halifax broke long standing high temperature records for May 15 both near the waterfront and at the airport. Shearwater reported a high temperature of 26.7 C, breaking the old record of 23.3 C set in 1921. Halifax International reported with a high temperature of 28.0 C, breaking the old record of 25.0 C set in 1974.

A weak weather front dips into the Maritimes tonight triggering thunderstorms in northern New Brunswick Thursday evening. Overnight expect increasing cloudiness with patchy fog and drizzle for the region.

Mostly cloudy with maybe some sun for Friday. A northeast wind will return to eastern parts of the Maritimes and significantly cool temperatures. Expect highs of 12 C to 18 C for areas near the eastern coastline of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and eastern Nova Scotia.

There will be a low chance of a showers through the day and a risk of thunderstorms in northern areas of Nova Scotia, including Cumberland, Colchester, Pictou, Antigonish, and Guysborough Counties.

Western parts of the Maritimes remain mild-to-warm tomorrow. High temperatures of 18 C to 24 C. Temperatures will continue to drop for the region through the Victoria Day long weekend.
