Mount Etna erupts, spewing lava into Sicilian sky

An active volcano in Sicily erupted early Saturday morning, spewing lava and ash into the orange-hued sky.

The eruption at Mount Etna’s summit comes after researchers detected volcanic tremors earlier in the week.

“On May 17th we witnessed an increase in the amplitude of volcanic tremors and recorded intense degassing accompanied by occasional, weak emissions from the north-eastern crater,” said a statement from the Catania branch of Italy’s National Vulcanology and Geophysics Institute.

The dramatic display was caught on camera by videographer Turi Caggegi. The video appears to show ash and smoke bursting hundreds of metres into the air as lava gurgles from the summit.

Mount Etna is Europe’s highest active volcano and has erupted on an ongoing basis throughout modern history. The summit is more than 3,200 metres high and often changes in height after an eruption.
