A timeline of key moments from the 2016 U.S. election

With the 2016 U.S. election now over, here is a look at how events unfolded on November 8, Election Day and the aftermath once the results were announced on November 9.

Nov. 9: As of 2:40 p.m. ET, final vote tallies are still outstanding for Arizona, Michigan and New Hampshire.

Nov. 9: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's reaction and remarks to the U.S. election outcome.

Nov. 9: U.S. President Barack Obama addressed the nation from the Rose Garden at the White House and urged America to join him in rooting for President-elect Donald Trump's success.

Nov. 9: Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton gave her concession speech on Wednesday morning and offered to work with Trump.

Nov. 9: Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine thanked supporters before introducing Hillary Clinton ahead of her concession speech.

Nov. 9: Wednesday morning, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada spokesperson Lisa Filipps confirmed that as the day drew to an end on November 8, Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website was “temporarily inaccessible” to users. This happened as the U.S. election results were being tallied. The outage was due to a surge in people trying to access it.

Nov. 9: In Washington, D.C., on Capitol Hill, a house known as Sewall-Belmont drew voters who left flowers and "I voted" stickers. Sewall-Belmont is the headquarters of the National Women's Party.

Nov. 9: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issues a statement on the result of the U.S. election from Ottawa.

Nov. 9: Russian president Vladimir Putin sends President-elect Donald Trump a telegram to congratulate him on winning.

Nov. 9:  Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton conceded the presidency to Donald Trump in a phone call early Wednesday morning.

Nov. 9: President-elect Donald Trump calls on Americans across the political spectrum to "come together as one united people."

Nov. 9: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump addresses the nation.

Nov. 9: U.S. Vice-president elect Mike Pence thanks the nation before introducing U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Nov. 9: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump wins the U.S. election.

Nov. 9: Donald Trump wins Pennsylvania, a battleground state.

Nov. 9: Hillary Clinton wins Nevada, a battleground state.

Nov. 9: Republicans win Pennsylvania and retain control of the Senate.

Nov. 9: Donald Trump wins North Carolina, a battleground state.

Nov. 9: Donald Trump wins Florida, a battleground state.

Nov. 9: Hillary Clinton wins Colorado, a battleground state.

Nov. 9: Early November 9, as election results come in, Asian stocks and oil prices take a tumble.

Nov. 8: The Associated Press starts to announce state results. Clinton wins Vermont. Trump wins Indiana.

Nov. 8: A spokesperson for former president George W. Bush says that George W. Bush and Laura Bush did not vote for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

Nov. 8: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, releases a statement on the U.S. Election.

Nov. 8: A Nevada state judge denies a request from the Trump campaign to preserve ballots and voting materials related to what the campaign alleges were irregularities during early voting.

Nov. 8: Besides long lines and occassional broken machines, there are no signs of the large-scale fraud, intimidation or hacking some had feared.

Nov. 8: In Nevada, lawyers for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump file a lawsuit. The claim: polling locations were kept open "two hours beyond the designated closing time."

Nov. 8: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump vote in New York City.

Nov. 8: Susan B. Anthony was arrested for illegally casting a ballot in the presidential election on November 8, 1872. Over a century later, voters flock to her grave site to pay their respect.

Nov. 8: During a speech in Michigan, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump comments on the celebrities in attendance at this rival’s rally.

Nov. 8: WikiLeaks releases a new batch of emails with regards to John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign chair.

Nov. 8: Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton cast their ballots in Chappaqua, New York.

Nov. 8: Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton kicks off Election Day with a midnight rally. In attendance: Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga.
