Winnipeg police find 22 drivers under influence during second week of checkstop program

The Winnipeg Police Service and RCMP found 22 impaired drivers during the most recent week of its holiday checkstop program.

Winnipeg police saw a slight increase in the number of impaired drivers during the second week of its holiday checkstop program.

According to data released Tuesday, Winnipeg police and Manitoba RCMP said they found 22 impaired drivers between Dec. 8 and 14, two more compared to week one. Police said 547 vehicles were stopped during the week.

Of those drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, five received an immediate roadside prohibition, one driver failed a drug-screening test and 16 drivers were issued a “warn” on the testing device, resulting in a licence suspension.

During the first week of the program,613 vehicles were stopped and 20 people were found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while behind the wheel.

Manitobans are being reminded to choose an alternative to driving if they plan to drink or consume cannabis, including Operation Red Nose, Winnipeg Transit, a taxi, rideshare services or a designated driver.
