Manitoba highway reopens following collision involving train, semi

A highway that cuts through Carman was closed to traffic Wednesday night following a crash involving a semi and a train.

A highway that cuts through Carman, Man. was closed to traffic Wednesday evening following a collision involving a train and semi.

Crews with the Carman Dufferin Fire Department (CDFD) were called to Highway 13 around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The roadway runs directly through Carman, a town about 85 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

CDFD Chief Chris Lemky told CTV News a semi-truck was travelling south on Highway 13 when the collision occurred.

“[The driver] saw the train last-minute and tried to hit his brakes,” Lemky said in a phone interview. “But he couldn’t stop because of the road conditions and got hit by the train.”

Lemky said no one was hurt in the collision and the train didn’t derail from the impact.

“Everything work out pretty well other than the highway being blocked for a couple hours,” he said. “No fuel or product was spilt… so it was a fairly easy cleanup.”

According to Mantoba511, Highway 13 in Carman reopened to traffic shortly before 8:30 p.m.
