The importance of breast cancer screening for early detection

Dr. Inglis, medical director at the Breast Health Centre, shares who’s most at risk, the new screening age, and how early detection improves outcomes.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, Manitobans are being reminded of the importance of screening when it comes to early detection.

According to Shared Health, it’s estimated that one in eight Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, making it the most common type of cancer among Canadian women, excluding melanoma.

Doctor Duncan Inglis, medical director of Shared Health’s Breast Health Centre, said women should be aware, healthy and informed when it comes to breast cancer prevention and protection.

“We just recommend that you should be aware of your breasts,” he said, adding that he also encourages women to limit their alcohol intake, maintain a healthy body weight, and live an active lifestyle.

“If there’s something different or changes, then that’s something you should seek help for.”

In terms of screening, Manitoba has a plan to lower the age of self-referrals to 40 years old by December 2026, while women aged 50 to 74 are recommended to get a mammogram every two years.

Doctor Inglis noted that Shared Health is trying to increase the percentage of women aged 50 to 74 who are screened, especially those in remote areas or who are reluctant about the process.

“The big thing is, especially if you’re in the 50 to 74 category, get screened,” he said.

“The breast screening program will contact you. You can talk to your health-care provider and they can set you up with the program.”

The breast cancer screening program sends out letters to those who are in the eligible age range to remind them of their mammograms. Those who are younger or notice any abnormalities should discuss their options with a doctor.
