Thursday’s storm system continues to affect parts of east-central and northeastern Alberta. The deep low-pressure system is now way off into Manitoba, but a trough of low pressure stretching back to the west continues to bring rain and snow to areas from Lloydminster north to Fort McMurray. That’ll continue throughout today and some accumulation is possible in a few areas. Another new low-pressure system will spin up in southern Alberta and that’ll mostly affect the western edge of the province where upsloping easterly wind will generate snow later today and through Saturday. A snowfall warning is in effect for areas around Banff; 10 to 20 cm is possible by Sunday morning. A special weather statement related to a lower risk of heavy snow includes Jasper/Hinton/Grande Cache as well as Calgary and the southwest corner of Alberta. BUT...between those two systems, we’re going to miss out on all the really active weather in the Edmonton region and surrounding areas. The big story here will be the cool spell. Sure, we’ll get some gusts to around 30 or 40 km/h late this morning and early this afternoon. But, the wind will be calmer through Saturday-Monday. Yes, we might see some scattered showers today and/or Saturday. But, it won’t amount to much and should be fairly hit-n-miss in nature. As cooler air has settled in over the province, we’ll only get to a high around 12 C today and 9 C Saturday. Sunday should be in the 13-14 C range. Morning lows will dip near the freezing mark and some patchy frost is possible in outlying areas, especially Saturday morning. By Monday afternoon, we’ll see some sun and temperatures return to the mid-teens, which is pretty close to average for mid-May. Bottom line: A few showers possible Saturday and then drier and a bit sunnier through Sunday/Monday. Chilly mornings all three days, but a slight warming trend through the three afternoons with Monday being the warmest day of the weekend.
