Northern system to bring snow to much of Manitoba

After light, intermittent snow crossed much of Manitoba on Tuesday, a more substantial snowfall is underway in the province on Wednesday.

A low pressure system in the Northwest Territories will move toward Manitoba Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said five to 10 cm is possible in northern and central parts of the province, while more could fall in the northwest.

Snow is also likely to reach into the southeast by Wednesday afternoon, including the Whiteshell and Bissett regions and parts of the Interlake. It’s possible that Winnipeg could be grazed with light snow on the precipitation field’s southern flank. If so, it won’t be much.

Otherwise, temperatures are mild across the south, especially in the southwest, where daytime highs on Wednesday could reach or even surpass the freezing mark. The price of milder conditions, though, is a cloudy sky.

Temperatures will rise close to 0 C overnight in Winnipeg and the southeast, while southwestern temperatures will hold steady around the freezing mark.

The warm-up is courtesy of a building ridge of high pressure that will bring milder temperatures to southern Manitoba for the next few days, except for a brief dip on Friday.
