New tool for legal oaths introduced by Winnipeg Police Service

A significant day for the Winnipeg Police Service as its district stations will now hold sacred eagle feathers.

The Winnipeg Police Service is bringing in a new option for its legal oaths.

On Wednesday, the service introduced a ceremonial eagle feather for victims and witnesses providing statements, as well as officers affirming oaths. It explained that the sacred item carries the same legal standing as an affirmation or swearing on a bible.

Police added that a person is to speak with truth and integrity when holding an eagle feather—an item that holds meaning and personal comfort in the Indigenous culture.

“Today’s announcement allows the Winnipeg Police Service to provide an elevated level of culturally appropriate service to Indigenous people,” said Staff Sgt. Brian Chrupalo at a news conference on Wednesday.

“Many Indigenous cultures recognize the eagle as having a special connection to the creator. The eagle feather is a sacred item.”

Police note the feathers were prepared in compliance with traditional protocols and include beadwork in the colours of the Medicine Wheel and the four nations. Women participating in the Indigenous Traditional Program at the Behavioural Health Foundation did the beading.

The eagle feathers will be available at all four district stations beginning this month.
