Manitoba saw highest homicide rate among provinces in 2024: Stats Can

Manitoba had the highest homicide rate among all provinces in 2024, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

Statistics Canada has released new data showing Manitoba has once again claimed a grim record, holding the highest homicide rate among the provinces.

While Canada’s homicide rate and number of homicides decreased last year, Manitoba saw a jump. According to Statistics Canada, the province reported 94 homicides last year, compared to 75 homicides the year prior.

This led to a 22 per cent increase in its homicide rate in 2024 – jumping from 5.16 per 100,000 people in 2023, to 6.29 per 100,000 people.

That’s compared to Canada’s homicide rate of 1.91 per 100,000 people in 2024.

Saskatchewan had the second-highest rate of 5.24 per 100,000 people, reflecting a total of 65 homicides in 2024.

Broken down by census metropolitan areas, Thunder Bay, Ont., saw the highest rate of homicides last year, recording a rate of 6.46 per 100,000 people. That was followed by Chilliwack, B.C., (4.75) and Winnipeg (4.66).
