Manitoba athletes inducted into Hall of Fame

The 34th annual Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies honoured star athletes, including former Olympians, Major League Baseball and National Hockey League players.

They've made their mark in the sporting world and now their names are in Manitoba's history books. Seven individuals and two teams were inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony Saturday night.

"I feel mostly gratitude, and having the opportunity share moment with friends and family, it’s really special," said Olympic swimmer Shannon Shakespeare.

The inductees included four athletes, two sport builders, one all-rounder, and two sport teams. The Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of athletes that have called Manitoba home. The inductees are nominated by people across the country.

“It’s a great honour,” said former Winnipeg Jet Dale Hawerchuk. “All I can say is thanks to everyone who followed me and enjoyed what I did. I feel like I was the lucky one, got to do what I loved every day.”

"I look back at all the people who sacrificed their time to get to where I was and to be on the stage, there’s a lot more names that need to be on that stage to help us athletes get to where we need to get to," said former Major League Baseball player Corey Koskie.
