Kidnapping suspect arrested in Winnipeg: RCMP

A man wanted following an alleged kidnapping in northern Manitoba last month was arrested in Winnipeg.

Manitoba RCMP have arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped and held a woman against her will in a home over two days in Gillam last month.

Riley Champagne, 36, was arrested in Winnipeg on Oct. 29. He had been wanted on a warrant for multiple charges, including kidnapping with a firearm, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement. He remains in custody.

According to RCMP, a 25-year-old woman from Bunibonibee Cree Nation called them saying she escaped from a vehicle and had been held against her will for 48 hours.

RCMP said the woman consumed several beverages with a man and woman at a bar in Thompson. The woman believes she was drugged as she later woke up in a vehicle in Gillam.

The woman said she was repeatedly assaulted in the home and had a firearm pointed at her, and was threatened with physical harm if she tried to leave.

She was able to escape from the vehicle when the suspects went to get food at a grocery store.

RCMP arrested Crystal Nepitabo, 41, of Gillam on Oct. 7, charging her with kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement and theft under $5,000.

None of the charges against both suspects have been proven in court.
