Another Winnipeg councillor is ending their time at city hall. Markus Chambers announced Tuesday on social media that he will not be seeking re-election. The councillor for St. Norbert-Seine River was first elected in 2018 and was acclaimed to city hall in 2022. He thanked all the residents of his ward, saying it has been an “honour of a lifetime” to represent the area. “From improving local parks and advocating for better infrastructure, to standing up for flood mitigation and supporting our small businesses, every initiative was shaped by your voices. You invited me into your living rooms, your community halls, and your heartfelt conversations. You trusted me to represent our ward, and for that, I will be forever grateful,” he wrote in a letter posted online. Chambers said while he has loved representing his ward for the past eight years, it is now time for him to focus on his family and step back into the roles of dad, husband, and grandpa. “This was not an easy choice – St. Norbert-Seine River has become a part of who I am, but the time has come for me to step back and focus on my family, who have supported me unconditionally through every long night, missed dinner, and early morning meeting.” Chambers becomes the fourth councillor to officially announce they are not seeking re-election, joining Janice Lukes, Brian Mayes, and John Orlikow. Winnipeg’s election is scheduled for Oct. 28.
