WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s police watchdog says there will be no charges after two Winnipeg officers fired 16 shots at a stolen truck barrelling towards them. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba say the April 11, 2025 confrontation happened on what witnesses described as a busy neighbourhood street where children were playing. The watchdog says the driver of the truck veered onto a boulevard to escape police and later crashed into a house, igniting a fireball. Acting civilian director Bruce Sychuk says in a report that he found the officers’ actions were reasonable, as they feared their lives were in danger from the red pickup speeding at them. He noted that no one was injured in the shooting. Some witnesses criticized the police for firing their guns and said they were shocked no one in the neighbourhood was hurt.
