Parts of Manitoba could see heavy snowfall: ECCC

Manitobans are being warned to prepare for closures and cancellations later this week as a wallop of winter weather hits the province.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement for parts of southwestern Manitoba on Tuesday, saying that heavy snowfall is headed to this area.

The weather agency said a developing low pressure system will bring between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow to this region. The weather event is expected to begin overnight Tuesday, continuing into Wednesday and possibly Thursday morning.

ECCC warns that snow could make travel slow or dangerous, adding that roads and walkways could become slippery. It also recommends that people prepare for possible school and event cancellations.

Freezing weather in northern Manitoba

Along with the special weather statement, ECCC also issued a yellow warning – cold for portions of northern Manitoba.

It said wind chills between -45 and -50 are affecting several communities on Tuesday morning; however, temperatures will moderate as the day goes on.

ECCC warns that young children, older adults, those with chronic illnesses, people who work or exercise outdoors, and those without proper shelter are most at risk during extreme cold.

The weather agency recommends covering up, dressing in layers and keeping pets inside.
