Funnel cloud advisory lifted after multiple sightings in southwestern Manitoba

A funnel cloud advisory issued Friday afternoon for parts of southwestern Manitoba has ended, after several sightings were reported across the region.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Friday, warning that weak thunderstorms could produce funnel clouds. The advisory covered more than a dozen communities, including Brandon, Minnedosa, Virden, Melita, and Deloraine, as well as Turtle Mountain and Riding Mountain national parks.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” ECCC said in its initial statement. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

By Friday evening, the weather agency confirmed that multiple funnel clouds had indeed been spotted in the Westman region as a cold low pressure system moved through the area.

According to a weather summary issued at 9:03 p.m., the following sightings were reported:

• 1:33 p.m. — Chater
• 2:45 p.m. — Brookdale
• 3:00 p.m. and 3:35 p.m. — Hallboro
• 3:55 p.m. — Fairview

Thunderstorm activity weakened later in the day, and the advisory was lifted.

No damage or injuries were reported in connection with the funnel clouds.
