Energy independence and collaboration discussed at Winnipeg conference

First Nations groups are gathering in Winnipeg share ideas on improving their energy grids.

Manitoba First Nations took part in a conference Monday to look at ways to become more energy independent.

The Grid Strong, Nation Strong conference, hosted by Berens River First Nation at the Viscount Gort Hotel, saw attendees examine ways to ensure food and energy sovereignty to help keep communities safe in the event of disasters.

“We’re looking at how to empower our communities to start thinking outside the box and working with the right folks, whether it’s government or Hydro or whoever, to look at community-driven solutions,” said Greg McIvor, forum coordinator for the event.

McIvor noted the issue is gaining popularity in several Indigenous communities in the province, owning to repeat disasters and evacuations. Last year, multiple First Nations communities were forced to evacuate due to wildfires up north, and in December, Pimicikamak Cree Nation residents had to leave their homes due to a week-long power outage in the middle of an extreme cold snap.

“There has to be a mechanism where communities can strengthen their own system, their own communities,” McIvor said.

McIvor added a collaborative approach is needed between First Nations communities and government organizations, including Manitoba Hydro, to help make some of these ideas a reality. Representatives from Manitoba Hydro and all levels of government were in attendance at the conference.

“We’re looking at ways to work together, change processes and be reflective of the communities,” McIvor said.

The conference wraps up Tuesday.
