Manitoba weather: Winter wallop on the way

It is a mild Louis Riel Day in southern Manitoba and Family Day in northwestern Ontario on Monday. Enjoy the mild conditions while they last—a wintry wallop is on the way.

Southeastern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, and northwestern Ontario will enjoy a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, with daytime high close to, or rising above the freezing mark.

Brandon and the southwest will be on the cloudier side with slightly cooler temperatures on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the northwest will see a mix of sun and clouds Monday, while snow and flurries will fall in the northwest. Temperatures in most areas will reach the mid-minus teens this afternoon.

Quiet, mild conditions are expected in the south on Monday night, but Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for the region for a major snowfall starting Tuesday.

East winds will strengthen across the south on Tuesday afternoon as snow begins to fall in the southwest. Snow will spread into Winnipeg and the southeast in the evening.

ECCC said 15-25 cm of snow is possible from Tuesday evening, tapering off Wednesday overnight into Thursday, adding the highest amounts could fall in higher terrain in western Manitoba.

Freezing rain is also possible, primarily in extreme southwest areas.

Anticipate poor driving conditions on Wednesday and Thursday across southern Manitoba. Once the system moves off, colder temperatures will return.
