Colleen Bready’s Forecast: Temperature rollercoaster coming to southern Manitoba

Unseasonably mild conditions continue on Monday, but be prepared for a temperature rollercoaster this week in southern Manitoba.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal will bring daytime highs near and above zero for the next few days—just not every day.

On Monday, daytime highs will climb above the freezing mark in Winnipeg and across the south in increasingly cloudy conditions.

Skies are sunnier over the border in Kenora in northwestern Ontario, where temperatures around the region are also very mild Monday.

Meanwhile, intermittent snow will begin Monday across most of northern and central Manitoba, courtesy of a low pressure system developing over northern Alberta.

The weather agency says highest snowfall accumulation should be 5-10 cm through Lynn Lake, Thompson and Island Lake. Snow will taper off Tuesday.

As the low approaches, ECCC said there is also the possibility of freezing rain Monday afternoon from Lynn Lake to the Whiteshell. That includes Winnipeg and surrounding areas. That said, be prepared for potentially slippery roads and highways Monday afternoon and evening. But with temperatures rising above freezing, ECCC said its impact will be limited.

Temperatures will remain steady around the freezing mark Monday night in Winnipeg.

Clouds stick around Tuesday as temperatures fall from above zero to around -11 C in the afternoon.
