Charges laid in fatal shooting on Langside: Winnipeg police

A 53-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following a shooting in the city’s Spence neighbourhood this summer.

A 53-year-old man has been charged in a fatal shooting that happened this past summer in the city’s Spence neighbourhood.

Melvin Catcheway, a 25-year-old man from Lake St. Martin First Nation, was found unresponsive by Winnipeg police on Aug. 29 in the 600 block of Langside Street. Police said Catcheway was shot during an altercation with the accused. Police said the two men were previously known to one another.

Catcheway was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he died from his injuries.

The Homicide Unit took over the investigation and arrested Troy Donavan Bernier on Nov. 28. He’s charged with second-degree murder along with warrants for failing to comply with probation and for uttering threats.

He was detained in custody.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
