Blizzard, freezing temperatures coming to northern Manitoba

It’s going to be a frosty end to 2025 with much of northern Manitoba expected to experience freezing temperatures on New Year’s Eve.

As of Wednesday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow warning – cold for several northern communities, including Gillam, Thompson and Churchill.

According to the weather alert, wind chills in these areas are expected to range from -45 to -50. ECCC notes this extreme cold will last through Wednesday morning with “marginal improvement” throughout the day. The weather is expected to improve on Thursday.

The weather agency warns that extreme cold puts everyone at risk and reminds Manitobans to cover up, dress warmly and keep emergency supplies in your vehicles.

Blizzard heading to Churchill

Along with the cold warning, Churchill is also subject to an orange warning – blizzard.

According to ECCC, the town is experiencing blizzard conditions including strong winds up to 90 km/h, blowing snow and near-zero visibility. It notes wind speeds will increase on Wednesday afternoon, adding that visibility may be up and down until the “strongest winds align with falling snow” on Wednesday evening.

The blizzard conditions are forecasted to remain in place on Wednesday and Thursday with the worst of it expected on Wednesday night.

ECCC warns that travel in the area will be dangerous and potentially impossible due to poor visibility and potential road closures. Those who must travel should have an emergency plan.
