A ‘heart-stopping’ polar plunge to support Special Olympics Manitoba

More than 130 law enforcement officers and community members participated in the 2026 Winnipeg Polar Plunge, supporting Special Olympics Manitoba.

Jump into a trailer-full of icy water and freeze for a good cause – that’s what Manitoba law enforcement officers and community members did.

Over 130 law enforcement officers and community members participated in the Polar Plunge at Princess Auto Stadium on Saturday, jumping into an ice-cold water trailer to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Manitoba’s sport programs.

Members of the Winnipeg police, RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Canadian Armed Forces were some of the participants.

Directly supporting over 2,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities across seven regions in the province, the event will lead to opportunities in 17 different sports, according to a media release.

“It’s coming together in the community,” said Cory Wiles, president of Winnipeg Police Association. “We got our police association with our sworn officers in uniform, along with the families that are all supporting them … everyone’s coming together to support such a worthy cause.”

Plunging into the trailer himself, Wiles participated in the event for around six years, describing the jump as “an alarming entry” – but it was worth it for the cause.

“It is literally heart-stopping, but you know what – it reminds you why we’re here.

“We’re here to make sure that those funds are allocated towards some of the most needing individuals that are most worthy individuals, that are training for sport.”

“It was amazing, breathtaking,” said Willie Jefferson, defensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, coming out from the trailer.
