Warning about counterfeit bills in Essex: BIA

The Essex Business Improvement Association says they have received reports of counterfeit bills being used in downtown Essex.

Local businesses are encouraged to stay alert and diligent when handling cash transactions.

The Essex BIA is asking the public to remember the following:

• Double-check larger bills
• Use counterfeit detection tools if available
• Remind staff of the common warning signs

The 8 ways to identify a counterfeit bill:

• Texture
• Raised ink
• Small leaf transparent window
• Metallic portrait in the large transparent window
• Number value in the large transparent window
• Border of maple leaves around the large window
• Building illustrated in the large window
• Serial number

If you suspect a bill is counterfeit, do not accept it and report it to the proper authorities.
