Keeping your pets safe this Halloween and Thanksgiving

Halloween and Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. Rover Canada is offering up tips to ensure your furry friends are safe during the festivities.

Thanksgiving pet safety tips:

• Many human foods can be dangerous for dogs, especially carved turkey, where bones can splinter and cause internal damage if ingested
• Extra foot traffic through the house can be stressful for your pets and can also give them the chance to slip outside unknown. Create a quiet, safe space for them to nap and relax during the meal/celebrations
• Many common plants and flowers can be poisonous to your pets. If you are hosting and get gifts of flowers or a potted plant, make sure it’s pet friendly

For the Halloween celebrations, here are some tips:

• Keep candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free treats with xylitol in them, far out of reach. These can be fatal to your pets
• Be mindful of how your pets feel in costumes. Some may love them, but some may be stressed out or restricted. Keep them safe and functional
• Frequent trick-or-treaters at the door can create escape opportunities. Consider creating a safe space, similar to the Thanksgiving tip, to give them a place to stay.
• Keep decorations and candles out of reach from pets
