Witnesses sought after Port Coquitlam, B.C., crash that sent vehicles into pedestrians

Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward following a crash in Port Coquitlam, B.C., that left one person seriously injured this week.

Coquitlam RCMP said the incident began when a vehicle was rear-ended while approaching a red light at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

“Both vehicles then continued through the intersection, striking a third vehicle and several pedestrians,” the detachment wrote in a news release Thursday.

Video shared by police shows the first two collisions, but ends before the pedestrians are struck.

Coquitlam RCMP said one of the drivers was hospitalized with serious injuries, and that paramedics took the others involved to hospital as a precautions.

“All drivers and pedestrians remained at the scene and have been co-operative with investigators,” the detachment said.

Authorities said they are hoping to piece together what happened in the moments before the first crash, and urged anyone with information or dash-cam video to come forward.

Alcohol and drug impairment are not suspected factors, the RCMP said.
