Vancouver council unanimously approves $60K grant to save Commercial Drive’s Italian Day

Vancouver city council voted to give a popular street festival the cash it needs to pull off the event this year.

Vancouver city councillors have unanimously approved a “one-time extraordinary grant” of up to $60,000 to prevent the cancellation of Italian Day on the Drive next month.

Organizers of the annual Commercial Drive block party had warned that they were facing a deficit of that amount because of reduced corporate sponsorship revenue, a drop they attributed in part to competition from the FIFA World Cup.

Coun. Lisa Dominato, who brought the motion to council, told CTV News last week that she believed the one-time cash injection would be sufficient to allow Italian Day to survive for years to come.

“This is really an extraordinary circumstance,” she said, at the time.

“The fantastic thing about Italian Day on the Drive is it really does bring people together in a safe way, in a celebratory way, and I think we need more of that in the city.”

While the circumstances facing Italian Day may be unique, it’s not the only festival struggling with a budget shortfall this summer, nor is it the first time councillors have stepped in to provide municipal funding to keep an event afloat.

In March, councillors approved $30,000 to fund Vancouver Car Free Days, after that festival’s organizers cancelled this summer’s events due to “rising operational costs” and “changes to grant funding and operational support.”

Last month, councillors voted to provide $45,000 to the organizers of the Vancouver Vaisakhi Day Parade and Festival. They also approved the creation of a dedicated “festival support fund.”

Coun. Pete Fry, who brought the motion to create the fund, said at the time that the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Vancouver Pride and Khatsalano festival were all also reporting significant financial strain.

All of that followed the cancellation of the annual Celebration of Light fireworks festival, which was put on hold “indefinitely” last November due rising production costs, the elimination of federal funding, a “dramatic” reduction in provincial support and declining private-sector investment.

Mayor Ken Sim brought a motion to council in February calling for the city to spend $2 million on a single-night fireworks show in August to fill the gap left by the Celebration of Light.

Funding for the Italian Day grant will come from the 2026 operating budget “or another funding source deemed appropriate by the general manager of finance,” according to Dominato’s motion.

Italian Day is scheduled to close 14 blocks of Commercial Drive—from Venables Street to North Grandview Highway—from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.
