Three kittens ‘barely a day old’ rescued from Kelowna, B.C. scrap yard, SPCA says

One of three tiny kittens found mere hours after being birthed in a scrap yard in Kelowna, B.C., is embarking on a solo journey to recovery.

According to the B.C. SPCA, the trio had been stumbled across in “various locations” by someone working at the yard, Aug. 13.

“Barely a day old, one still had the placenta attached,” says Shannon Paille, the manager of the animal organization’s Kelowna branch.

The finder had searched the yard for any potential additional siblings and the kittens’ mother, to no avail.

“It’s heartbreaking to imagine these tiny kittens alone, without their mother or even each other for warmth and protection,” says Paille.

The three abandoned newborns were brought to an animal hospital for emergency care, but only one would make it through to see their second day.

One kitten, in “critical distress” upon arrival, had to be humanely euthanized right away, B.C. SPCA said. The other two were held in an incubator overnight and given subcutaneous fluids, but another had to be put down after “extensive efforts” to stabilize her deteriorating condition proved unsuccessful.

Paille says the organization has found an “amazing foster” for the third kitten, who has thrown themselves into round-the-clock care to ensure the litter’s sole survivor has a happier end to their tale.

The kitten is being fed once every two hours and weighed daily to check for signs of any positive gain. An animal safe heating pad has also been brought into the home to

provide comforting warmth and ensure he is kept at a consistent temperature as he recovers.

So far, the fostered kitten is responding well to treatment and its new parents are cautiously optimistic about his health, says Paille.

“This kitten has a fighting spirit.”
