Serious crime unit investigating after man found dead beneath Oak Street Bridge in Richmond

Mounties in Richmond are investigating after the discovery of a body underneath the Oak Street Bridge Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were called to the scene near Van Horne Way around 3:15 p.m., Richmond RCMP said in an email to CTV News Thursday morning.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are under active investigation by (the) Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit,” the email reads. “There are no indications of any risk to public safety at this time.”

Police said their investigation is ongoing and declined to provide any additional information.

The presence of the serious crime unit indicates the possibility that foul play has not yet been ruled out. However, the fact that police did not refer questions to the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team suggests police believe it’s possible the cause of the man’s death was not criminal.
