Security tightened as New West Salmonbellies look to clinch Mann Cup

The New West Salmon Bellies are leading the Six Nations Chiefs three games to two, meaning they could win the title Friday.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies have a chance to capture their first national title in 34 years Friday night — and their record-setting 25th in franchise history.

The Salmonbellies lead the Six Nations Chiefs 3–2 in the best-of-seven Mann Cup final, Canada’s most prestigious lacrosse championship. The team secured a pivotal win in Game 5 on Wednesday and now returns home to Queen’s Park Arena with the opportunity to seal the series in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 3,500 fans.

“It’s everything. It’s bigger than all of us,” said Salmonbellies general manager Ray Porcellato. “The team has obviously been around for over 130 years and it’s so entrenched in the community. We take it really seriously to try to bring this thing home for the city of New Westminster.”

But the excitement comes with heightened security. Monday night’s game was marred by an incident in the stands.

“During the altercation, one fan was struck with a bullhorn to the head, requiring several stitches, and that investigation is still ongoing,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver of the New Westminster Police Department.

Porcellato called the incident “a black mark on that game,” saying emotions sometimes boil over in the heat of the moment.

As a result, noisemakers — other than traditional drums — are now banned from the arena. Alcohol rules have been tightened, bag checks are mandatory, and police have increased their presence inside and outside Queen’s Park Arena.

“We’re committed to this being a fun, safe and family friendly event that everyone can enjoy,” said Leaver.

Despite the off-floor distractions, the spotlight Friday is firmly on the players — and on history. The Salmonbellies are just one win away from reclaiming lacrosse’s holy grail.
