Rocks fall at the north end of Squamish’s Stawamus Chief

The Ministry of Environment and Parks says the rockslide at Squamish, B.C.'s Stawamus Chief happened at the mountain's Zodiak wall. (Stawamus Chief Webcam)

A rockslide happened near a popular hiking destination in Squamish, B.C., on Monday morning.

The Ministry of Environment and Parks confirms to CTV News that the “rockfall” occurred at around 9 a.m. and says no one was injured, as far as they know.

The rockslide happened on the mountain’s north side, at an area called the “Zodiak wall.”

The ministry says the wall has seen multiple slides before, with a smaller one happening in February of this year, and two larger events taking place in 2015 and 2021.

“Rockfalls inherently exist throughout the Stawamus Chief park and can occur at anytime. Visitors are advised to use extreme caution,” it said in a statement.

As the Ministry explains, the slide wasn’t along any trails or infrastructure maintained by BC Parks, and no park closures are in effect.

BC Parks describes the Stawamus Chief as “one of the largest granite monoliths in the world.”
