Repeat offender charged after alleged attack on transit police officer in Vancouver

A violent repeat offender n Vancouver has been arrested again, this time being charged with assaulting a peace officer.

A 30-year-old repeat offender has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, Metro Vancouver Transit Police said Friday.

Officers approached Shakwan David Kelly outside Waterfront Station on Wednesday afternoon to “discuss his open use of illicit drugs,” MVTP said in a news release.

“During the interaction, Kelly allegedly charged at the police officer, striking him in the face and body,” MVTP said.

Authorities said Kelly – who has been designated a high-risk violent offender following a string of stranger assaults last year – fled on foot but was arrested a short distance away.

“This incident is a reminder of how unpredictable policing can be and the risks our officers face while working to keep the traveling public safe” said Const. Amanda Steed, in a statement.

Kelly remains in custody pending his next court appearance, police said. He has a bail hearing scheduled Thursday in Vancouver provincial court.
