Mounties in Coquitlam say they recently seized four electric dirt bikes from a group of youths who were riding them where it is illegal to do so. Coquitlam RCMP received a complaint of youths racing e-dirt bikes on the road last Monday, and found the group in a parking lot near Coast Meridian Road and David Avenue, according to the detachment. The young people were handed multiple violation tickets, police said. In a news release Monday, Sgt. Adriana O’Malley said complaints involving e-dirt bikes have increased “significantly” in Coquitlam. “Parents and guardians need to know that these vehicles are not legal to operate on public roads, sidewalks, parks, bike lanes, or school grounds. Riders who choose to do so can face substantial fines and vehicle impoundment,” she said. Whether they are gas powered or electric, police reminded riders that dirt bikes are only allowed on Crown land, prescribed private land, or designated off-road trails. Coquitlam RCMP say they will continue using education and targeted enforcement to make sure off-road vehicles are being used lawfully.
