Novice driver in BMW clocked going 100 km/h over speed limit in North Vancouver, RCMP say

A novice driver allegedly tried evading police after being clocked going more than 100 km/h over the posted speed limit through North Vancouver.

Authorities said the incident unfolded earlier this month on Highway 1, where officers spotted a BMW going 181 km/h in an 80 km/h zone and tried to initiate a traffic stop.

“Instead of pulling over, the driver chose to flee from police,” North Vancouver RCMP said in a social media post.

While the driver initially got away, authorities said they were able to stop the same BMW after it came speeding back in the opposite direction a short time later.

The 23-year-old driver was issued nearly $1,000 in fines, including $483 for excessive speeding and $109 for failing to display the required “N” decal as a novice.

Cpl. Mansoor Sahak told CTV News the young man was not the registered owner of the vehicle, which was impounded after the incident.

Asked whether the driver could face charges of fleeing from police, Sahak said the RCMP’s investigation is ongoing.
