West Vancouver police seek help identifying man found dead in the mountains more than 25 years ago

A composite image of a man found dead in the mountains above West Vancouver in 1999 was handed out by police on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The West Vancouver Police Department is asking for the public’s help to identify a man who was found dead in the North Shore mountains more than 25 years ago.

The man’s body was found in a green tent southeast of Eagle Lake, also known as Dick Lake, on May 4, 1999, according to police. It’s believed he was living in the tent and died sometime in 1998.

The department released a new composite photograph recreating what he may have looked like alive.

The man is described as about 5’6” tall and 150 pounds with short grey hair and “distinctive teeth.” Investigators estimated he was anywhere between 40 and 70 years old. Reading glasses he used were found with a hammock and other belongings in the mountains, which police also released images of.

“While it has been some time since this gentleman passed away, we are hoping this new composite photograph will help jog the memory of someone who remembers him,” WVPD spokesperson Suzanne Birch said, in a news release.

“We would very much like to find out who he is, and, if possible, provide some measure of comfort to family and friends who may be missing him.”
