A suspect was arrested after he allegedly “brandished” a gun at a coffee shop customer Thursday morning in New Westminster, according to police. Authorities said the incident unfolded around 6 a.m. on the patio of a café in the Columbia Square shopping centre. The New Westminster Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call, and tracked a suspect across the street, through a hole in a fence and across some railway tracks. The individual was carrying “prohibited weapons, knives and cans of bear spray,” and officers later found a gun while searching the area, the NWPD said in a news release Friday. “This is the second time within a week our officers have seized a firearm,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, in the release. Authorities said the suspect was found with help from a police dog, who located him in some bushes along the railway tracks. The K9 and handler were “instrumental in the arrest and recovery of the firearm,” the NWPD said. Police have not released the name of the suspect, who has yet to be charged in the incident.
