Mounties say a rainbow crosswalk in Fort Langley was vandalized by a group of young people on electric dirt bikes soon after it was painted. Township of Langley staff installed the crosswalk at Mary Avenue and Glover Road on June 22, and the damage was reported to police the following day. “The rainbow crosswalk was installed as a symbol of inclusion, diversity, and community pride,” police wrote in a statement. “Damage to public infrastructure, particularly features intended to celebrate community values and inclusivity, not only affects the broader community but also results in unnecessary repair and maintenance costs.” Based on surveillance video from the area, police say three people, believed to be youths, intentionally damaged the crosswalk by riding over it and leaving black tire marks. Langley RCMP released images of the suspects Thursday and asked anyone who recognizes them to come forward. The rainbow crosswalk at Mary Avenue and Glover Road has been similarly damaged several times over the years. The township installed cameras at the intersection in 2023 in an effort to catch drivers who intentionally burn rubber on it. Aside from the vandalism incident, Mounties say safety concerns related to e-dirt bikes are on the rise, including dangerous driving, risks to pedestrians and property damage. “Langley RCMP continues to receive reports regarding the operation of electric dirt bikes on public roads, sidewalks, crosswalks, parks, and other public spaces,” the statement continues. “Many of the electric dirt bikes currently being operated in the community are not street legal and do not meet provincial requirements for use on public roadways.” Anyone with information on the crosswalk vandalism is asked to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and reference file number 2026-19678.
